Can a 4-pin PWM header be used with a 3-pin case fan?
The fan 3-pin connector can be easily connected to a 4-pin socket on the motherboard. The fourth pin is simply left blank in this configuration.
In most cases it will run at a fixed speed, uncontrolled.
Some newer boards offer the possibility to adjust the fan speed via voltage. Look for the "Fan Control Mode" option and set it from "PWM" to "Voltage" or "Analog". For details, refer to <Motherboard Manual>.
A 4-pin fan can also be installed on a 3-pin socket. Here too the fan will run at full speed if the control type is not modified.
